From Dread to Excitement: Getting Motivated to Climb

woman at a climbing wall

I started the year with a grumpy realisation: it was time to start preparing for my Climbing Wall Instructor qualification.

I did the climbing training a year ago and I’d forgotten pretty much everything.

I dug out my climbing training training notes to find I’d written next to nothing. We are talking about 300 words total. Bloody useless. In fairness to myself, the two days of training were 98% practical, which is why the notes were nearly non existent.

If you’ve read my newsletters, you’ll know that when it comes to qualifications, I disproportionately freak out. I’m still scarred by bad learning experiences from my childhood.

But this time, I was determined not to ‘willpower’ my way through by working too hard. That’s the old Katya way. I knew I had to make it fun – to almost sneak myself into enjoying the process.

January is a sh*tter of a month anyway;  who wants to do anything in January? Let alone go to an unheated, freezing cold climbing wall to practise stuff.

So, I played it by ear and stayed open to finding fun ways into learning. Here is how my January climbing journey unfolded:

Community Climbing

My friend Lucy started inviting me to climb with her and her friends. It was a total stroke of luck. These group climbs injected some much needed energy and camaraderie back into my sessions.

Expert Climb Coaching

I booked a coach. It’s been bloody brilliant for inspiration. Hanging out with a pro has been validating and really exciting.

Climbing Microadventures

I visited a couple of new climbing centres (Summit Up in Oldham and Substation in Macclesfield). Exploring new walls added a bit of novelty and adventure spirit to the chore of training.

Relatable Inspiration From the Climbing World:

I’ve been mainlining YouTube videos by Hannah Morris. Unlike the macho, overconfident vibe of many climbers, Hannah is an intermediate climber and a self-confessed self-doubting, anxiety ridden human. She’s vulnerable and open about her mental health struggles and feeling like a failure when she’s defeated by a climb. Watching this nervous human being get coached by GB pros encourages you to feel like there’s a way into harder climbing for you too.

Retraining

I’ve signed up to do the Instructor Training course a second time. I honestly can’t be arsed to sit and revise the syllabus. I learn by demonstration, doing, and validation – so why not just make my life easier and do the practical part again?

It’s now the beginning of February. A month ago, I was despondent and scared about the instructor assessment. And now I feel genuinely excited, motivated, and confident.

Woohoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you want to release yourself from subconscious limitions and lead a bigger life?

EFT  is brilliant for untangling incorrect beliefs about ourselves forged in our past.  You may think you are in the driving seat of your life, but unfortunately it is your subconscious calling the shots.  EFT sessions allow you to course correct so that you can take back control.

To give you a bit of an insight into how it works, here’s what one of my clients said about working with me:

Whilst engaging in EFT I applied for and successfully got a new job, a promotion that I had talked myself out of for several years. Also I resigned from a number of voluntary roles and commitments as I felt I was given ‘permission’ to do so. This means I have a greater sense of control over my own life and feel free. Yesterday at work someone commented on how much energy I seemed to have which is the first time anyone had ever said that!
